January is here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to reset and refresh. A great place to start? Your home. Decluttering your space doesn’t just make it more organized and visually appealing—it can also reduce stress, create a sense of calm, and even increase your home’s value.

This year, I decided to tackle my own clutter. By the end of my project, I had filled eight large black bags with clothing and other items I no longer needed. The transformation was incredible. My closet went from a chaotic mess to a neat, organized space that made me feel lighter and more in control. The process reminded me just how powerful a decluttered home can be.

But getting started can feel overwhelming, so here are some tips to make decluttering manageable and even enjoyable:

1. Start Small and Stay Focused

Don’t try to organize your entire home in one day. Pick one area to start with, like a single drawer, a closet, or even your car. Once you see progress in one small space, you’ll feel motivated to tackle more. It’s all about taking that first step!

2. The “Three-Box Method”

As you go through your items, sort them into three boxes: Keep, Donate, and Discard. This method forces you to make decisions about each item and keeps the process organized. Plus, donating gently used items is a great way to give back to your community.

3. Ask Yourself the Hard Questions

When deciding whether to keep something, ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the past year?

  • Does it bring me joy?

  • Would I buy this again today? If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go.

4. Make It a Family Affair

Decluttering doesn’t have to be a solo task. Get your family involved and turn it into a fun activity. Set a timer, play some music, and see who can fill their donation bag the fastest. It’s a great way to teach kids about organization and generosity.

5. Find Inspiration from the Experts

If you’re looking for extra motivation, I highly recommend the book The Art of Organizing by Cape Cod author and owner of “B. Organized,” Nicole Gabai. Nicole’s book is packed with practical tips, real-life examples, and encouragement to help you transform your space. You can find her book here. It’s a fantastic resource, and it could even make a thoughtful gift for someone you know who’s ready to start their own organizing journey.

6. Celebrate Your Progress

Each time you complete a space, take a moment to appreciate your work. Decluttering isn’t just about the physical act of organizing—it’s about creating a space that supports your well-being and happiness. Celebrate those small wins!

Where to Donate

Not sure where to take your gently used items? There are plenty of local donation centers that would love to accept your contributions. Reach out to me, and I’d be happy to share recommendations for donation spots near you.
